At Monks Orchard School our curriculum is guided by The National Curriculum. We aim to grow enquiring, creative, thoughtful, stimulated, confident and independent learners who take pride in their achievements.
We are developing our topic based curriculum using units from the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), focusing particularly on Creativity and Outdoor Learning. We believe that it is crucial for our pupils to have visits and visitors to extend their learning beyond the classroom. This involves understanding the benefits of using the many rich resources that our local area and our community provide. As well as this we work in partnership with many organisations to enhance and strengthen the quality of our provision. Our topics are introduced through hands on experiences, which promote and develop enquiry and higher level thinking skills, as children, with the teacher, collate the direction of their learning journey through pupils’ questions.
We teach the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and Computing (ICT) in addition to the foundation subjects of; History, Geography, Design and Technology, Art and Design, Music, Modern Foreign Languages (at KS2) and Physical Education. The teaching of RE is a compulsory element in the curriculum and we are required to teach to the locally agreed syllabus provided by Croydon. We also ensure that the Personal, Social, Health and Emotional aspects of learning and life are taught, discussed and valued. These skills and attitudes form an intrinsic part of our aims, ethos and approach to learning and teaching and we follow guidelines to support us in delivering this aspect of the curriculum.
Children in the Early Years (Reception and Nursery) follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. There are seven areas of learning for these younger children. These are, ‘Personal, Social and Emotional Development’, ‘Physical Development’, ‘Communication and Language’, ‘Literacy’, ‘Maths’, ‘Understanding the World’ and ‘Expressive Arts and Design’.
To teach Phonics, we follow the structured programme “Letters and Sounds”. Phonic teaching begins in Early Years and continues until the end of Year 2. Any children needing further phonics lessons in Year 3 & 4, follow the ‘Read Write Inc’ phonics intervention scheme.
We use a combination of teaching methods and styles to deliver the curriculum in a broad, balanced and creative way. We believe in a cross curricular approach to learning and have schemes of work in place for each subject whilst making sure these link with other subject areas as often as possible. We are fortunate to have motivational outdoor facilities and give outdoor learning a high profile across our curriculum.
We arrange for numerous special events which stimulate the interest of the children. Visits from Authors, Artists, Musicians, themed weeks such as Creative Arts, Science, Maths or Book Week, class outings and residentials are all encouraged and carefully planned.
